This Monday begins the Rio Open 2025, which is the only ATP 500 tournament in South America and one of three in the world played on clay courts. The event will run until February 23 and will take place at the Jockey Club Brasileiro, in the Gávea neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro.
The main figure of the tournament will be German tennis player Alexander Zverev, the world number two, who will participate for the first time in the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro. Among the Argentine tennis players standing out in the tournament is Sebastián Báez, the winner of the 2024 edition, seeking a repeat championship. Francisco Cerúndolo and Tomás Martín Etcheverry will also be present.
Danish player Holger Rune, ranked number 12 in the world, has confirmed his withdrawal from the tournament due to shoulder issues. However, players such as Italian Lorenzo Musetti and Chileans Alejandro Tabilo and Nicolás Jarry will participate. Additionally, five Brazilian players will be part of the tournament, including Joao Fonseca, who recently won his first ATP title at the Buenos Aires Open by defeating Francisco Cerúndolo in the final.
Fonseca's rise in the ATP ranking has been remarkable, climbing 580 places since February 2024 to reach number 68, becoming the number 1 in Brazil and the youngest champion in ATP tournament history. The first day of the ATP 500 Rio Open will start at 16:30 local time, with six singles matches and two doubles matches.
